The men's competition saw Uchimura untouchable once again in his 2014 debut. Uchimura, undefeated since finishing second at the 2008 Olympic Games, was invincible in Tokyo. He scored 92.898 to claim victory over German veteran Fabian Hambüchen (90.231) and Japan's Ryohei Kato (89.397).

Uchimura, who owns four world all-around titles and the 2012 Olympic all-around gold medal, earned the highest score on every event except parallel bars. He capped off his competition with an upgraded high bar, stick a triple-twisting double layout dismount.

Hambüchen performed cleanly on his nemesis, pommel horse, and hit the rest of his sets. The two-time Olympic high bar medalist was second to Uchimura on his best event by just .034.

Kato, who finished all-around between Uchimura and Hambüchen at last fall's world championships, was solidly in second going into the final event. But the 2012 Olympian fell on his Cassina (layout Kovacs) on high bar and settled for third place.

Brazil's Sergio Sasaki finished fourth over British Olympian Dan Purvis, who tied Hambüchen for the won the overall World Cup series title. The Tokyo World Cup was the final of four all-around World Cups in over the past six months, following events in Stuttgart and Glasgow in December and the American Cup in March.

The rein of four-time world gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura shows no sign of ending anytime soon. The 25-year-old gymnast, the all-around gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, seems still at the height of his powers.

But how long can he keep it up? While Uchimura mulls remaining active in the sport until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, two ambitious young rivals are intent on catching up to and dethroning him.

For Ryohei Kato, this month’s Tokyo World Cup would have been an ideal place to demonstrate how much he has closed the gap between him and Uchimura. However, the result did not turn out as he had expected.

In October, Kato won the all-around silver medal at the world championships in Antwerp, Belgium, as Uchimura secured his record four straight title. Kato’s result made people believe the 20-year-old is the top candidate to succeed Uchimura in the future.

After the world championships, Kato worked to improve his performance in his two weakest disciplines, the rings and the pommel horse. Ahead of the Tokyo World Cup, which was held on April 5, Kato quietly expressed his confidence, saying, “If I give a flawless performance and Uchimura-san makes just one mistake, it will be a close competition.”

However, it was Kato who faltered first. In the floor exercise, the competition’s first event, he stepped outside the line. He made the same mistake in the vault, the fourth event.

Uchimura stamped his superiority in the last event, the horizontal bar, in which Kato again made a major mistake. Kato, who performed ahead of Uchimura, slammed to the mat after failing to grab the bar while executing a Cassina, a G-difficulty skill. Meanwhile, Uchimura, performing last, successfully pulled off a Cassina and nailed a perfect landing with a Fedorchenko, an F-difficulty skill.

“My aim was to give a performance that would be regarded as the ideal,” Uchimura said.

Kato did show some improvement from the world championships. He trailed Uchimura in all six events of the all-around competition in Antwerp, but at the World Cup, Kato finished first in the parallel bars with 15.533 points, 0.13 ahead of Uchimura.

However, Kato realized the gap between him and Uchimura remains big. “He’s still far above the likes of me,” said Kato, who finished third overall in Tokyo as Uchimura took the gold.

But Kato remains determined to catch up to Uchimura. “Unless I set my goals much higher and work much harder, I will be never be able to surpass him.”

Kenzo Shirai is still a high school student, but the 17-year-old has already surpassed Uchimura in one event—the floor. At the October world championships, Shirai nailed two original moves, one in the floor and the other in the vault, and became Japan’s youngest-ever world gold medalist when he won the floor title. Uchimura finished third in the event.

Uchimura described Shirai’s performance in the floor as “something beyond human beings.”

However, to really prove he has surpassed Uchimura, Shirai needs to evolve from a specialist to an all-rounder. “He is competing at the top of Japan’s gymnastics, so I want him to perform in all six events,” Uchimura said.

Shirai himself knows what to do next. “My task is to become an all-rounder,” Shirai said after the world championships.
